Picture Perfect

In a world filled with cliched notions about beauty , intellect and even happiness , the life and art of Frida Kahlo is a beacon of  light . A Mexican artist , Frida was crippled by polio when she was six and was involved in a bus accident at eighteen which rendered her bedridden .She underwent multiple surgeries to recover but what remained intact was her will and her love for Painting .

Frida painted many self portraits in her brief life . Armed with a bushy unibrow and a pronounced limp , Frida did not confirm to the society ’s idea of beauty and her life was hardly an epitome of joy .Yet her portraits are full of bright and vibrant colours and not dull melancholic hues .To me that signifies immense self confidence and self worth .

The portrait of Frida wearing a necklace of thorns with a hummingbird hanging while a monkey and cat are gnawing at it caught my attention .A powerful piece , to me the necklace of thorns signifies self doubt that plague us sometimes preventing us from giving our best . The monkey and cat represent strong will and positive people who encourage us to break free from the shackles of self doubt and become the best version of ourselves .

Frida’s self portraits seem to tell me that I may be pleasantly plump ,probably overweight and autistic -but I am picture perfect the way I am .

  2. Beautifully put! People will see what they want to see. We can’t change them. But yes definitely we can change ourselves to see what a beautiful creation each one of us are in our own unique ways! After the 50 trillion cells in our bodies are working relentlessly to keep us safe and the least we could do is to acknowledge the same with gratitude :)

  6. Dear Aditi,

Life is a blessing. We have to celebrate every breath of our life. Each of us is made differently. Whatever be our personal limitations, yet we can make a meaningful contribution to the people and all other forms of life, all around us. We can spread love and happiness to all the living beings in our world. Human beings, animals, birds, trees plants, flowers. In the process, the more happiness we give, the more happiness we get back in return, as that I believe, is the law of nature. You are on this right path, Dear Aditi, and you have expressed your personal belief with regard to this 'law of nature', of giving, sharing, caring and spreading love and happiness, to one and all, most beautifully. Please continue to explore your wonderful world, Dear Aditi, and each one of us, your equal partners, in this wonderful journey of ours, would share our beautiful and meaningful world with you. Let us all continue this enjoyable journey of ours, together. Good day, Dear Aditi.

    Venkatesh Govindarajan.
