Tiny Speck

One of the rooms in my house has beautiful wall art made by the previous owner . It has a statement that caught my eye - “ We are a way for the cosmos to know itself ". I was curious to know more and thus began my research on the life and work of Carl Sagan, a famous astrophysicist and planetary scientist to whom the quote is attributed .

Carl Sagan was best known for his famous show on American Television - The Cosmos - A Personal Journey , that talked about the universe and evolution of life . In the opening episode Carl Sagan said the famous words, “ We are made of star stuff . We are a way for the cosmos to know itself .” He went on to talk about how you need to have imagination and scepticism in equal measure , to explore the universe and about how understanding the cosmos will help us understand our own self .

I found the episode very interesting and could identify with most thoughts . We are just a tiny speck in the vast universe , but the only known speck to have enough intelligence , curiosity and determination to figure out the ways of the cosmos and its secrets . Curiosity , imagination and scepticism are key to learning and growth . After all , had Galileo not questioned the existing body of knowledge , we would probably have still believed that the Earth is flat and thanks to Copernicus’ quest for truth, we know that Earth goes around the sun and not vice versa, as was long believed.

Human race is as dynamic as the cosmos itself and the process of understanding the universe helps us to understand ourselves .

What a coincidence Aditi, I saw the video of Pale Blue Dot, just this morning, which I received on my WhatsApp, from a contact. I found it so profound that I forwarded it to many of my contacts, including you. I did not know that its author was Carl Segan. And a little later, I saw your reply to my yesterday's comment in reply to your latest blog, educating me that the author of 'Pale Blue Dot' is Carl Segan. Is this not a intutive cosmic coincidence?
