It Fits !!
When was the last time that you found a perfect dress online -one that you believed was made for you and was available in your size too . One that costed all of the remaining balance in your Paytm wallet but you decided to order it nevertheless and when it was finally delivered , much to your chagrin , it did not fit you !
When was the last time that you went clothes shopping to your favourite store and observed people with a normal build picking out clothes from the plus size section !
These are instances that many of us identify with because it is that common .
The need to look good and prefer certain textures , colours and type of clothing to achieve the desired look is probably as old as the invention of clothes itself . After all, there is an entire , hugely profitable industry that is built to cater to this need- the fashion industry- an industry that has the power to make a lasting impact on our psyche in more ways than one.
Many of us love to sport clothing brands , especially ones that are available in countries across the globe . These are the same ones that more often than not do not fit well . Why is that so ?
It is probably because most of these brands don't take into consideration the different body types while designing their merchandise . They stick to a concept of average sizes that does not take into account people who are top heavy , have a pear shaped body or are petite or way too lanky . A true example of one size fits all, they do not appropriately customise their collection to cater to the prevalent body types in the specific country .
What's more, many brands charge a premium for their plus size range , a premium that is not justified by a few centimetres of extra clothing used!
Body bias also makes its covert presence in advertising where plus size models are given unflattering clothing and the most aesthetic merchandise are modelled by people who could well be cloth hangers !
So why should this be a problem ? Not being able to fit into the kind of clothing that they wish to wear can leave people feeling terrible about their bodies. Increasing popularity of diets like intermittent fasting, paleo diet and mediterranean diet, that have no scientific basis of making a person healthier, is probably indicative of an increasing need to conform to a certain concept of looking good.Eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia are fuelled by unrealistic beauty standards. Besides the deep rooted psychological impact on self esteem, these disorders cause irreparable damage to health .
There is a fine line between exercising to stay healthy and extreme workouts to achieve a certain look- a fine line which when crossed can be harmful.
They say that clothes maketh a man! I say that we should make clothes that bring out the best in people. Why fit in when you are born to stand out ?
Absolutely, stand out! Come to think of it, shopping isn't all that fun.
